Karen McCall has advised individuals, couples and businesses since 1988 with Financial Recovery, a money-planning method that combines numbers and habits: an annual plan, periodic expenses, distinguishing needs from wants, continuous plan adjustment. The method worked in one-on-one sessions, workshops and through the certified counsellors trained by her Financial Recovery Institute, but its reach depended on those hours, and off-the-shelf budgeting apps do not capture its concepts. To bring the method to more people and generate recurring revenue, she needed a product of her own: subscription software that her clients and coaches could use daily, with a personal version and a small-business version.

What we did
We started with a UX/UI phase to translate the method into product flows, and then built the web platform: monthly and annual spending plans, a calendar of periodic expenses, accounts and transactions with bank-file import, reports, subscription billing and an admin panel. After launch, the same team has maintained the infrastructure and added the improvements real usage called for, such as the mobile adaptation, annual category management and multi-currency support.

The result
MoneyGrit. has run since 2021 as a subscription service, in personal and business versions, and is the tool Karen McCall and the coaches trained in her method use with their clients. The method, which used to depend on paper and sessions, now has its own digital product that can be sold, taught and updated. Six years on, Nakima is still the platform’s technical team and supports MoneyGrit on decisions about its roadmap.
